TYPICAL TEAM MEMBERS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
SQUAD LEADER: Leader of the five to nine member squad. The Squad Leader is responsible for all the squad does or fails to do. Prior to the exercise, the Squad Leader has been briefed via a written handout on the capabilities of each squad member. The Squad Leader has the final say on all matters pertaining to the exercise although he must rely heavily on the combined expertise of the squad to be successful.
THE NAVIGATOR: Responsible for all operations involving the provided map. The Navigator has received written instructions on how to accomplish his/her tasks, and prior to the exercise will receive a class to reinforce the written material. The Navigator will plot all positions and measure distances. The Navigator is familiar with map symbols, terrain features, and how to read a map grid. The Navigator also has the capability to determine a desired course.
THE COMPASS: Responsible for all operations involving the provided compass. The Compass has received written instructions on how to accomplish his/her tasks. The Compass will determine (with the aid of the Navigator, if so desired) and draw all course lines. The Compass will maintain the desired course as the squad navigates the terrain, and along with the Pacer and Navigator, immediately advise the squad if lost or straying from the plotted course.

THE PACER: Responsible for measuring distance traveled of the squad. The Pacer has received written instructions on how to accomplish his/her tasks. The Pacer has a device which will assist in distance measurement, and will have had an opportunity to determine his pace count. The Pacer will keep the squad informed of his/her measurements, and immediately advise the squad of perceived distance measuring abnormalities.

| THE SCOUT: As the SCOUT you are responsible for all intelligence gathering, reporting and lookout for your group. You will be required to find and intercept all unknown contacts. Very specific detail of your encounters with unknown forces will be required, as the scenario supports having competitor institutions searching for the same documents in your areas of operations. You must stay connected and interact with the ENGINEER, COMPASS, NAVIGATOR, COMMUNICATOR, PACER and, as aforementioned, the SQUAD LEADER who retains overall responsibility for the operation
|
| THE ENGINEER: As the ENGINEER you are responsible for aiding the squad leader as the primary resource for problem solving. Additionally, you are the ASSISTANT SQUAD LEADER. During the exercise you will be faced with many challenges. Some of these challenges will be physical and you will need to consult with the team to overcome these “problems.” Some of these challenges will be mental or logic challenges. You will be the “go-to” person for these operations. When not being used as a problem/logic solution advisor, you may be asked to be the “pack mule” for the team. You will also be responsible for working with the other members of your group (COMMUNICATOR, SCOUT, COMPASS, NAVIGATOR, PACER AND SQUAD LEADER) during all operations and tasks. You will be responsible for selecting from a collection of equipment, the most important gear for you and your team to carry.
|
THE COMMUNICATOR: Responsible for all communications internal and external to the squad. The Communicator has received written instructions on how to accomplish his/her tasks. The Communicator has been given a portable radio with a three to six mile range, and instructions on how to operate the radio. Additionally, the Communicator has been given a list of required and recommended radio transmissions, as well as a sample of a proper radio transmission.
